Time to scrape off the mud and shake off the rust.

We took 24 players to a windy Effingham and Leatherhead and so were able to field two 12 aside teams. Half term holidays meant that some players were absent but this was still a good turn out and a much needed run out for players, coaches and the referee.

The Blues played two games – an extended first game and a shorter second game. Chipstead won the first game (5-10) and lost the second game (15-5). The Golds played two regulation length games, losing their first game (15-0) and fighting a tighter second game to a draw (0-0). This final Golds’ game saw the boys collectively display a dogged determination on the pitch; delivering one of the best performances seen from the team and narrowly missing out on a winning try.

Given that the last time the Exiles had played was on the 26th January, these games were an ideal opportunity to scrape off the mud and shake off the rust.

The absence of rugby recently (competitive or otherwise) was noticeable and fitness is area that some of the players need to address. In particular it was noted that some of the Blues were struggling to get back up to speed with the pace of their game. So with the weather on the turn for the better (we hope) and with festivals on the horizon it may well be worth donning the training gear and getting some serious fitness training in.

As only the third session of club rugby this year however this was a spirited display played in a good spirit. Big thanks to the coaches, players and parents from Effingham and Leatherhead for four enjoyable games. We’re looking forward to meeting up again soon in the festivals.
