Chipstead V Wimbledon

Wombles Wobbled
Away Team: Wimbledon
End Score: 5 - 5

The day started with confusion over who would be supplying the coffee, the recipients of which were hoping that for the main game of the season, played on a cold windy morning they would be able to have a hot pint of latte instead of the warm beverage which is supplied from Banstead, but anyone who has dealt with a plumber will know that what you think is hot vs a plumber’s view is a disagreement that can carry on for ever, luckily for us there was no confusion with the Chips boys, they knew exactly what they had to do and came prepared to take on Wimbledon.

Wimbledon came down to Chips with a formidable reputation for scoring points without letting any in. If one believed the hype Chip’s should of been well down by the end of first half. I don’t think the boys from SW19 (SW20 really) were prepared to meet with the Chips lads who were up to showing that they were more than capable of taking them on and were not intimated by their run of form. The first half ended 0 0, with one Chips fan overhearing a Dons fan complaining that the statistics are wrong and that Chips should not be this good.

The second half was just as close as the first, unfortunately the match reporter missed both of the Dons and Chips try’s which were scored in the opening few minutes as he was trying to multi task and help with sorting out the table arrangements which failed miserably. ( I bet this does not happen on BT Sport).

Both teams should be proud of how they carried themselves, they listened to the ref, were disciplined and played amazing rugby. if we had a little bit more luck on our side Chips would have come away and won the game, man of the match went to Alfie and Francis, although from where I was standing all of the team share man of match between them all.

While getting a draw was a good result as both teams were so evenly matched, Chips lost a couple of opportunities to win the match, giving away far too many penalties and not wining 50 50 balls, but our strong scum and superb tackling kept the Dons at bay.

It was a great game, played with passion and skill by both sides, thanks to the referee Peter Hutton for keeping the action going and overseeing the best match of the season.

A good turnout by the parents and supporters ensured that there was a lot of encouragement on both sides of the pitch. Well done and thank you to the coaches for getting the lads ready for this and all of the other games, not only do the boys play great rugby they have also picked up a few new words of “encouragement” which are best said in a Scottish accent.

Closing off, I all of the parents would like to say thank you to our resident master chef CliffChef who provided an outstanding lunch of pasta and sausages, which I am informed was superb. Clifton is available to do parties and weddings, and in the summer months’ funerals if you can get hold of an undertaker who is isn’t on holiday.
