Disciplined performance from the Chipstead 'Exiles' in Sunbury

Although this round of the Cup should have been against Sutton & Epsom, various logistical issues on the part of our local rivals led to a swapidy-do-da in the fixtures and we found ourselves travelling to Sunbury.

To put this Cup game in context London Irish went through their league campaign undefeated; averaging a net winning margin of 30 points a game against strong Inner Premier League opposition and in a friendly at the start of the season Chipstead shipped over 50 points against Irish. A big ask then for the Chipstead 'Exiles' but each and every player went into this game resolute that this was not going to happen again.

From the off the portents did not look positive with Irish scoring an unconverted try within the first 2 minutes. However Chipstead stuck to the game plan. Discipline at the breakdown was the key to this contest and in this Chipstead enjoyed the upper hand – as reflected in the high penalty count against the hosts. The tackle count in this game was equally high, from both sides, with players in each camp willing to put their bodies on the line to deny the other team momentum.

Momentum however is what Chipstead displayed when the ball got out to the wing for an excellent foot-race which was won by Chipstead under the Irish posts. Duly converted Chipstead headed for the half time two points ahead. However towards the end of the half Irish pressure and fast hands saw the ball move along the backs and exploiting an overlap opportunity they scored. Half time 12-7.

The second period of play was just as enthralling to watch. Physicality matched by game awareness saw both teams continually probe and test the defences of the other. This was a game in which both packs contested well and both sets of backs threatened points. The first breakthrough of the half came from Irish who scored another converted try. However again Chipstead retained their cohesion and held to the game plan, continuing to contest and set up opportunities; and we were duly rewarded when a blindside opportunity opened up and a well worked feint allowed the wing through again for a second converted try. Chipstead continued to press and it was only sound Irish defence that prevented another Chipstead move from concluding in a try. The game continued in this vein right up to the wire with both sides having opportunities. However at the final whistle the hosts had held on to their 5 point margin to run out ahead 19-14.

As usual a big thanks to the coaches, parents and particularly the players of London Irish for the welcome, the contest and the hospitality. For Chipstead, although this was a game lost, it was (as the coaches noted) probably one of the best games, if not the best game, we had played this year. The commitment of the players, the discipline at the breakdown, and the ability to mute one of the most potent attacking units in Surrey was a testament to the commitment shown by each and every one of the squad. A big well done to all the players. Next week we are away at Old Reigatians; so more of the same please.
