chips fight against relegation carries momentum

Chipstead produced one of their best displays of rugby this season. Conditions were favourable to Chipstead’s young backline who played with freedom throughout scoring some magnificent tries. Up front the pack dominated set pieces frequently marching the Old Paulines pack backwards in the scrum and disrupting there lineout at every opportunity.
Chipstead first try came as a result of the forward dominance with a pushover try from a scrum 5m out, Bigface having an armchair ride to touchdown. Pat duly converted from the tee. From the resulting kick off and Chipstead pressure we were awarded a penalty and resisting the temptation to go to the corner the decision was made to go for posts. Pat converted 10-0 Chips. The next passage of play saw Chipstead’s defence tested for relatively long periods with our exit strategy’s sometimes letting us down, none the less our defence held solid. Every time we had possession we looked dangerous with forwards making yards and backs making line break frequently. The next try came from a break up the middle from the returning Loz, the ball then found its way out to the wing with Tom Hawgood doing the business from a fair distance out. Only blip of the first half was Chipstead’s lack of discipline being marched back 10 making an un-kickable penalty kickable which the Paulines 10 converted. 17-3 HT.
Half Time break saw the introduction of Tom Colyer hot of a plane from the Alps as well as Manny and Chey, all would go on to make a impact. The following 40 minutes saw a flurry of Chipstead tries with 6 coming in a display of running rugby and not forgetting a well worked lineout move for senior member Chey to touchdown. Loz stepped up from the touchline to convert showing us what we’ve been missing for the last year. Unfortunately with the amount of tries it’s impossible for me to remember how each try was scored but there was one case of try avoidance from TC & TG which they were punished for in the bar after! Try scorers in the Second Half came from Bigface taking him to 2 in the game, Tom Colyer with a hatrick, Chey, Loz and Mason. Calum getting 4 conversions. Credit must go to Old Paulines for sticking with it when they had injuries and were playing with a couple of men down and for nearly grabbing a bonus point with 4 tries. Final Score Chipstead 62 – Old Paulines 18. Fantastic Performance by Chipstead.
Chipstead go to next week now knowing that safety is very much a possibility but 2 wins from the remaining 2 games must be the target at the forefront of everyones mind, Maximum numbers needed at training and for next Saturday.
