It was a cold and frosty morning that greeted the 31 travelling Exiles at Dorking for the first ‘train and game’ session of 2014.

The ‘cold and frosty’ however referred to the weather and not the reception at The Big Field, Brockham. As usual the Dorking coaches, parents and players offered a warm welcome to Chipstead for what turned into a compelling series of games.

Given that it is the crucible of competition that tests the mettle of the players, and after an absence of four weeks from Rugby, it would be interesting to see how much of an edge – if any – had been lost from the Exiles’ game.

The format agreed between the coaches was to run two short 7 minute games of mixed squads and then two more regular games of Dorking vs. Blues and then Dorking vs. Golds.

The cold wind made for cold hands – placing a premium on short accurate passing; and there was no shortage of knock-on’s and spillages (from both sides) to keep the Dorking referee busy.

The first two matches were an illustration of the importance of communication, especially when playing with unfamiliar combinations and colleagues, and how the lack of focus can offer up opportunities to the opposition. The first match ended as a draw (Dorking 5 – 5 Combined Exiles; no conversions being played) and the second match saw the hosts edge the game to win (Dorking 5 - 0 Combined Exiles).

Game three resulted in a victory for the Blues; with strong, physical rugby combining with some well executed moves. It was evident though that the edge was missing from their game. The pack however was coherent as a unit and provided the platform for the Chipstead game to flow. Dorking provided strong opposition, and they matched the physicality of the Blues to ensure a competitive game. Final score (Dorking 5 – 15 Exiles’ Blues).

Game four was a well balanced and equally competitive affair with the Golds both strong in defence as well as threatening the Dorking line. Whilst a scoreless first half reflected the inability of either attack to break the defence of the opposition; this was a consequence of the fortitude of resistance rather than a lack of potency in attack. The second half was equally well balanced with the fortunes of the game alternating between both teams. Right at the end however Dorking made the breakthrough and Chipstead conceded the points. Final score (Dorking 5 - 0 Exiles’ Golds).

So what can we learn from this post festive fixture? For the first run out of 2014, a set of matches against strong competition is the ideal way to start the New Year; and a big well done to all the Chipstead players, and thanks again to Dorking.

Speed of thought and speed to the breakdown were two features of the usual Exiles’ game dulled by the weather and time away. On occasion the Chipstead play was characterised by indecision and lack of communication and the fluidity that we have come to associate with the two squads was missing. Perhaps, however we can allow a degree of latitude for the Exiles’ lassitude given the conditions; and the fact that this was the ‘first day at the office’ after the extended holiday.

However now it is back to work gentlemen; the holidays are over. As the coaches noted at the end of the session; it is time to get fitter, faster and focused.

Next Sunday we leave Surrey for a trip down the A23 to West Sussex as we are away at Haywards Heath RFC. Let’s make sure of another good turnout for this new fixture to our calendar.
