League Week 2 - Away to Guildfordians who came down from Div 1 last season
As usual lots of injuries to deal with in the build up - but a strong squad made the journey to Guildford.
Coldest morning of the season so far and a pitch that made the Meads seem flat.
First half Chips had the slope so we were hopeful for a strong start
It was messy - with lots of errors from both teams but soon settled down - Chipstead had more of the possession and territory in the first half but couldn't make it count - there were probably 3 trys in the first half that we should have scored.
The simple team rugby that we normally excel at was forgotten - over complicating things cost us - at least we didn't concede in the first period.
Half Time 0-0
A stern half time team talk followed but we were playing up the hill
The start of the second half could not have been better - Team play - forward power - simple passing and despite playing up the hill we were gaining territory - Guildfordians were on the back foot -
The pressure finally paid dividends when Eoin burst across from his wing weaving and ducking and finally got the ball across to Harry to score in the corner.
0-5
More pressure from Chipstead and again a great offload from Eoin to put George in to make it 0-10
Guildfordians came back into the game but wave after wave of attackers was repelled by great defending.
The pressure eventually paid off for them and they scored under the posts to make it 7-10
less than 10 minutes to go - could we hold out - again and again tackles we made rucks were won and the ball was put back into Guildfordian territory
Finally the ref blew for full time A victory - just .
A great spirited performance in the second half but I feel we made very hard work and should have been more comfortably in the lead.
Lots to work on before the next league game
Not our best Rugby but we ground out a result
Thanks to Guildfordians for hosting and playing the match with a great spirit
Well done to the lads for never giving up
