The full report, from Peter N!

Cranleigh is always a tough place to go and get a result and with 6 players rightly moved up to the first team we had a team plus 3 subs. Playing on the first team pitch was a nice surprise. Cranleigh with their formidable pack was not going to make it an easy day out. The early exchanges balanced out about even, slowly Chipstead applied pressure and after 10 mins with a series of well supported phases it led to captain Matt going over for a try from 10m. Duncan converted 7-0 Chips.

Chipstead then had the belief and kept the pressure on, the forwards were paying brilliantly, with the addition of George Booth and Stuart Flack in the second row adding a great deal of speed with commitment. But it was Cranleigh that broke through the backs to score on 30 mins which was not converted. 7-5 Chips. Again Chipstead applied the pressure but with the backs not having played together much things were not quite going right in attack, although the defense led by Lewis was rock solid. But again it was Cranleigh that scored on 32 minutes and converted to make the score 12-7 Cranleigh.

Chipstead kept attacking with multiple phases that led to captain Matt going over just on half time, 12-12 at the break. Chipstead turned around knowing that by keeping the pressure on and keeping it basic in the backs the game was there for the taking. That is exactly what happened the Chipstead forwards upped the tempo, the scrum became dominant and line out a joy to watch. With the pressure came a penalty early on which Duncan converted 15-12 Chips. Changes were made due to injury, Jamie off so Ollie came on for a cameo role at center scored from a nice set of phases from the forwards and then decided to come off, get the shoulder sorted! Duncan converted 22-12 Chips. Cranleigh never gave up and looked very dangerous in the backs, but some very committed tackling in defense kept them at bay. It was from one of Cranleigh’s attack that Chipstead scored again, a long kick from Cranleigh deep into our 22 saw the multi-talented Alex Jelly (started on the wing, then fullback and finished at 9) picked the ball up straightened up his run at the Cranleigh backs and timed a delayed pass to Sean on the wing to run 70m to score a well-deserved try 27-12 Chips. Chips with their heads up kept the pressure applied and with 2 minutes left, penalty to Chips 5m out, the call was to scrum. Chipstead powered over for Simmo to score 32-12 to Chips. But before Simmo scored the most heinous of crimes was committed by captain Matt, he actually tried to steal the ball off Simmo to get his hatrick of try’s. Matt is currently under rehabilitation and not partaking of fags or booze at the moment which we highly respect but as soon as he is back on the source a boot will need to be consumed as punishment.

I could not pick a man of match the forwards both old and young played the best game I have seen for a Chipstead 2nds and were supported by an ever improving set of backs. It was a joy to watch and shame others did not see it. Well done all that played, thanks Mr Jelly and Mr Flack.
