After a drubbing at the hands of early promotion contenders Old Freemens 2 weeks ago 52-0 and then a rest week, chips had plenty of time to work on what went wrong. Players missing and injuries already mounting up are excuses but the truth. Number 8 James Mann joins Kieran Dupe on the treatment table and 3 key players in Mitch Lock, Darren Lilley and Ed Bush were out for one reason or another. It meant chances for others to stake a claim in their absence. Harry Mac another academy produced player rolled off the production line from #fortressmeads to take his bow in the first team after some good performances for the 2s. Adam Vallance as lynchpin in midfield returned to make a rare start after work commitments.
Warm up was a bit placid and not followed as was advised by Coach May, we know we start slowly so we need to get ourselves gee'd up effectively. The game kicked off and the scrums were 50/50 , not on who would win them 90% chips but on what way the ref decided to flip his coin and give a penalty mainly before the ball was put in. Whits banged over a couple of penalties before Chris Gould slotted 1 back in jest. Whits were breaking the gain line but once they did they were stopped by brilliant chips scramble defence. After 1 more penalty and an unconverted try by the old boy the score was 14-3 to the home team.
Half time team talk and we knew we had the win in us as we were playing the better rugby but we had to not panic and it would come.
All gave their best Tom goater put in some big hits. Adam Hollidge crashed over for a try . Billy Fowler made good of his 2 weeks off and scored another brace taking him to 5 from 5 not bad for a misshaped Dorito. He was every where in the loose and on breakdowns.
With another week off to watch the Tasmanian rivals face off for the William Webb Ellis trophy.
