Last senior game of the season was in the capable hands of one Nigel Rawlins (Wobble, Badger, Schofield)it was arranged against our good friends Rob Hegarty Team the South Godstone Stags who play around one game a month but don't play in a league. The team was supposed to be a 3XV game so many Wednesday Night (Executive Club) were keen and put there name down. But when it came to the crunch they had gardening, hair appointments and the usually Sunday chores to do.
With Nigel topping up his ridiculous tan in Spain it was left to the Dupes to organise a rag tag bunch of guys to compete. The idea was put about to have as many father son and father combos as possible but this is the Rapiers XV so that didn't go to plan as well as we would of liked either. We should of had the Thatcher's (nightmare haircut), Nick Bush (did you know he did the clipper race), Nick Mason and Stewart Flack to complete the respective family duos. Alas, it was not be.
Team was.
1.Chey Dupe (1st)
2.Martyn Floodgate (1st)
3.Ryan Dupe (1st)
4.Gez Matthews (u18)
5.Conrad Kingsley-Smith(2nd)
6.Kyle Kingsley-Smith(2nd)
7.Michael Mason(WB)
8.Paul Burrill(3rd)
9.Josh Burrill(2nd/u21)
10.Fred Howells (welsh)
11.Tom Goater (u18s)
12.James Mann (1st)
13.Billy Fowler(2nd/u18)
14.Roy Flack (3rd)
15.Nigel Rawlins (3rd) (Captaino)
late arrivals to make the bench was the Gibson's.
16. Danny Gibson (u21s)
17.Phil Gibson(3rd)
so a real mash-up bunch that hadn't played together and had a 15 minute warm-up.
We still had the Dupes, Kingsley-Smiths, Gibson's, Burrills and the Hegartys on the Stags Xv both ex Chipstead players.
There was also a traitor as Ed Bush (1stxv scrumhalf)was playing for South Godstone, an easy target with his cankles.
Warm up done and no subs the game kicked off, with Josh Burrill playing 9 and James Mann playing centre there was some people out of position. Chipstead started well with a couple of tries ran in and with the old Chipstead Cockerel spirit the try scorer had to convert without the use of a tee. South Godstone competed well with occasional players and some 1st time newbies to the game of rugby. The score line didn't matter it was for all to have fun and line up and smash the Hegartys and Bushy.
Half time and Chipstead were around 40-0 to the good. All players in both squads were given shots of sweet port to keep spirits high and numb the pain for the older players.
Second half and Godstone really turned up the heat and scored two very well taken and worked tries. Nigel Rawlins has been practicing his amateur dramatics and was out for the count at one point but the smell of ale brought him back round. Chipstead also scored 2 tries in the second half one by everybody's dad Roy Flack who at 87, is clearly the oldest on the pitch but scored from about 65 yards out with a nice chip over the defender and catch and then a couple of boshes over the cover defence to score in the corner.
So the second half ended in a 12-12 draw which was a fair reflection that the attitude and commitment of the Godstone guys deserved as we did have a couple of 1st team ringers.
Man of the Match was obviously Roy Flack, Stewart is a let down to us all.
Dick of the Day was destined to be headed to our only foreign national as Fred Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch Howells for trying to trick the fullback when a certain try was on.
Great Hospitality from the South Godstone Stags and Wobble looks forward to the home and away fixtures next year.
